With a little practice, you will soon be able to create your own manga characters.

What you need:

  • Pencils in different degrees of hardness
  • Sharpener
  • eraser
  • Fiber pens in different colors

First choose the right material

Surely you just want to get a pencil and paper to practice with at first, but with the right ones Utils it is certainly easier for you to draw:

  • The most important thing is the pencils. Buy them in different degrees of hardness so that you can draw in different ways.
  • Because you will trace your work with Indian ink after the pencil drawing, you will also need a high-quality eraser that avoids smearing and smudging.
  • An ink pen is required for tracing. Get one with a thin tip (less than a millimeter) that has waterproof ink.
  • You will also need one or more fiber pens to add color to your pictures.
  • Create a comic - step by step instructions

Comic characters have their charm and the stories that go with them all the more. As …

  • The paper should be selected depending on the intended use: For quick, simple sketches, a piece of paper or ordinary paper that you have at hand is sufficient. If you want to work out a draft or create a special picture, special drawing paper is recommended.

The typical characteristics of manga characters

If you now want to start designing a manga figure, there are a few typical tips to keep in mind:

  • When it comes to the shape of the figure's face, the more angular the face, the more adult the character appears.
  • The eyes of the manga characters are very important. There are very different methods of drawing these, they should definitely be relatively large and the iris should always be in the center of the eye.
  • You should draw light reflections both in the eyes and on the hair, this gives your Manga something alive.
  • If you would like to add color to your picture, a large selection of fiber-tip pens is helpful: With many Colours you can trace color transitions very precisely and make the picture look more real.

How to create your own figure

  1. First you start by drawing the head.
  2. The frontal view of the face shape is oval. The chin tapered at the bottom. This shape can be achieved with five lines: two lines around the cheek area are drawn inwardly, the two lines below that, which form the chin, are drawn outwardly a little. With a semicircle above these lines, a face shape is finally created.
  3. Now the head has to be divided with guidelines to distribute the proportions. Divide the head into three equal parts. The first third remains free, in the second third there are eyes and at the transition to the last third there is the nose. Draw your mouth and chin underneath.
  4. The nose rises up to the eyebrows. Most of the time - especially at the beginning - you shouldn't attach great importance to a perfect nose, often a hinted line is enough. If you are satisfied with the nose and its lines on the face, you can start to draw the brows.
  5. The eyes are probably the statement criterion of your figure: Narrow eyes look cool, aloof, but also attractive with female characters. Big eyes, on the other hand, symbolize innocence and cute naivete. Now draw the eyebrows at a large distance over the eyes and keep them particularly small, so you will intensify this effect.
  6. When it comes to the mouth, you have to distinguish between men and women. Female figures get thicker lips, while men get unstressed lines as mouths.
  7. For the hairstyle you first set a hairline and from there draw individual lines in the direction of the hair's flow. The more lines you draw, the more real the hairstyle looks. With the right accents and light reflections, you can conjure up such beautiful hairstyles.
  8. After you have finished a pencil drawing, ink and fiber pens are used. You can safely erase the pencil lines.

What you should definitely consider when drawing

  • You will need a lot of practice to create perfect characters. Don't be too critical at first and remember: practice makes perfect.
  • The tips listed here are just a little help to get you started. If you want to learn to draw really well, get specialist literature or visit so-called Manga courses that are already offered in many cities.
  • Also, as you practice, keep trying new things to learn other techniques.
  • There are now numerous drawing competitions where you can win great utensils for the hobby. Maybe that could encourage you to practice?
