Carry out the Unitymedia speed test correctly
You can apply for your cable internet connection from the provider Unitymedia KabelBW. A cable Internet connection is different from a conventional DSL connection and you can surf the Internet quickly. You can use a free speed test to measure the actual speed of download and upload.
Fast internet connection from Unitymedia KabelBW
- The German cable provider Unitymedia KabelBW offers you broadband internet via cable. The high-speed Internet is available with a bandwidth of 10 Mbit, 50 Mbit and 100 Mbit, among other things. You don't dial into the Internet via your telephone line, as with DSL, but via your cable connection. Unitymedia KabelBW will provide you with a cable modem after you have signed a contract.

How to do the speed test
Finish all uploads and downloads before you run the Unitymedia speed test. Close all active programs on your computer. Otherwise a running download will falsify the measurement. The speed test must be carried out without any further disruptive factors.
- Start your internet browser and open the Unitymedia Speedtest
- Click on "Start test" and the Unitymedia speed test will start automatically. Avoid using your computer during the speed test as this will falsify the results.

The Unitymedia Speedtest carries out three speed tests:
- The ping duration.
- A download speed test.
- A test of the upload speed.
The ping tells you how long it will take to send a simple message (a "ping") to a server over your Internet connection. It is in the range of a few milliseconds (ms).
The download and upload speed is shown in kbit, not in megabits per second (Mbit / s). Compare the measured speed of your Internet connection with the connection you have booked. Everything fits only if both have almost the same Mbit value.
What can I do if the Unitymedia speed test shows too little MBit when downloading?
First check whether you have other programs running parallel to your speed test that are using your Internet connection. Be the only one to run your speed test so that your measurement can be compared with the bandwidth promised by the provider.
If you carry out the measurement correctly and the display shows too little Mbit, you have two options:
Contact your provider Unitymedia and state the measured bandwidth or cancel.
Unitymedia may not be able to give you faster access to the network. In this case, accept the slower cable connection and continue using 3play. Or compare other providers and choose the one that gives you a faster cable connection Internet can offer.
As a new customer in the tariffs 2play and 3play you have a 2-month special right of termination ("high-speed network promise") with Unitymedia. Make use of it if the provider Unitymedia cannot provide you with the fast Internet as contractually guaranteed.
When is Unitymedia worthwhile?
Unitymedia is worthwhile if you are currently accessing the Internet via an ADSL connection. VDSL also offers a maximum of 50 Mbit. Currently, only cable offers the option to access the Internet at a higher speed.
For comparison:
- ADSL2 + (16 Mbit): 2.0 megabytes per second in the download
- VDSL50 (50 Mbit): 6.25 megabytes per second
- 3play PLUS 100 (100 Mbit): 13 megabytes per second
- 3play PREMIUM 150 (150 Mbit): 18.75 megabytes per second
For example, downloading a CD image with ADSL takes around six minutes and with 3play Premium 40 seconds.
