Ayurveda recommends drinking a glass of lukewarm water in the morning and in between. People who eat according to Western tradition can also benefit from this.

Lukewarm water for health

Drinking hot or lukewarm water can promote health and wellbeing.

  • Cooking enriches the water with energy. It should cook for five to ten minutes.
  • The hot water stimulates the digestive fire and thus improves digestion.
  • Hot and lukewarm water flushes toxins out of the body.
  • If it was boiled before drinking, the moisture absorption increases, which can have a positive effect on both digestion and the complexion.

  • A glass of lukewarm or hot water in the morning stimulates bowel movements so that bowel movements are easy and regular. Constipation is prevented. Warm water works better than coffee or tea to stimulate the morning digestion, but has none of the disadvantages such as caffeine consumption, nervousness or impaired liver function.
  • Just try drinking a cup of hot or lukewarm water first thing in the morning before breakfast. Ayurveda also recommends drinking warm water between meals to support toxin excretion.

Drink according to the doshas

Depending on which dosha you correspond most closely to, hot or lukewarm water can be drunk differently.

  • People in whom the Pitta constitution is dominant should drink the boiled water rather lukewarm, i.e. cooled to room temperature, since they are more likely to struggle with heat anyway.
  • People with a Kapha constitution should drink the water warm, as they are more prone to metabolic disorders.
  • People with a Vata constitution, who are more likely to freeze and have dry skin, can drink the water hot.
