How does a monsoon develop in India?
In the Indian Ocean, a very special wind whistles through the land and over the water: the monsoon. In translation, this simply means "season". But have you ever asked yourself how a monsoon actually develops in India?
From April to October the monsoon blows from the southwest and from October to April it turns completely and then comes from the northeast. In the summer months it often brings heavy rainfall, which leads to floods and landslides.
This is how the ominous wind is created
- Strictly speaking, the monsoon is an air current. This wind occurs when extensive land and water masses heat up to different degrees.
- In the summer months, a monsoon in India occurs when a high pressure area forms over the Indian Ocean, while a low pressure area stretches across the country.
- So a stiff breeze waves from the sea towards the land. However, this breeze has a lot of water in its luggage, which leads to the flood disasters in India, Bangladesh and Nepal.
- The wind changes direction quite abruptly at the end of summer and is now blowing full force ahead from the northeast. This wind is then dry.

The monsoons in India require warmth
- A monsoon can only form in a tropical area. In the summer months, temperatures of around 40 degrees are not unusual in India.
- As a result, the floor heats up and it also heats the air up. The air moves upwards and fresh air comes in from the southwest.
- On this way the wind collects evaporated water, which falls as rain over the land. Almost 80% of the total annual precipitation falls in the summer months. Although the monsoon rains bring a lot of suffering to the inhabitants of these regions, it is vital for the people, the animals and the plants.
