  • If you are buying your eggs straight from the farm, which is undoubtedly the best, then the laying date is easy to check. Ask when the chickens finished their "work".
  • When it comes to eggs from the supermarket, all you have to do is look at the best-before date. To find out how long the eggs will keep, count back 28 days from the best before date, so you can find out when the eggs were laid.

Do the "poultry products" hold up better in the refrigerator?

After being laid, chicken eggs have a natural protection against pathogens that cause disease - however, this protection is lost after around 14 days.

  • Only one thing helps - in the refrigerator. But even in this cool place, the egg won't last forever. If you want to be on the safe side, you should only eat eggs that are more than 10 days old when they are cooked - or use them for baking.
  • When preparing food that is not heated, such as mayonnaise, you should only use really fresh eggs. So you can be sure that you are not "afflicted" by salmonella.
  • If you don't know exactly how old an egg is, you can check it with a simple trick: fill a glass with it water and put the egg inside. A freshly laid egg remains on the bottom of the glass, an egg that is about a week old also remains on the bottom of the glass - but straightens up. Eggs that are more than two to three weeks old do not sink to the bottom - they float on the surface.

It makes sense if you have your eggs from day one in the refrigerator store. Never store your eggs for too long.
