Information about the piping

  • Piping is also called piping or piping. However, these terms are more likely to be found in the clothing sector. With upholstery covers, piping serves on the one hand as decoration and to cover the seam and on the other hand to stabilize the edge seams. In addition, the corresponding seams are made more durable. Piping can be made of cotton, microfiber or leather and can have the same color as the cover fabric or a different color.
  • In the trade, piping is available ready-made in a wide variety of designs as well as in the appropriate length and color. You can sew these directly into the relevant covers. There is also the possibility of making the piping yourself. Most often, the so-called piping is sewn into covers for seat cushions, in such a way that the piping protrudes clearly visible after being sewn in.

This is how you sew in a corresponding piping

Before you can sew the piping in, for example, pillow cases, you should first determine the required amount of fabric. If you want to make the piping yourself, you need two approx. 6 cm wide and the length of the seam, the so-called piping strips, plus the seam allowance. The cord used can have a diameter of about 4-5 mm, depending on the size of the cover.

  1. First fold the piping strips in half lengthways. Place the cord in the resulting break and sew or stitch the strip of fabric together directly on the cord. If you have one, use half a presser foot for this.
  2. Now place the two parts of the pillow case right sides together and between, edge to edge, the piping, pin everything in place. When you've pinned the pieces together, the ends of the welt should overlap. Then you can sew the pieces together. The cord or Cord, lie between the two pieces of fabric and grasp with the seam.
  3. Sew a hair tie yourself

Sewing a hair tie yourself is very easy. All you need is a piece ...

  4. It's best to start in a corner and sew the piping down to the corner where you started. If the piping has to be laid around the corner, i.e. should have a 90 ° angle, you can cut the seam allowances at the respective corners. The seam allowances can then be shortened to 1 cm.
  5. Now separate the fabric edging a bit at one end so that the piping is exposed. Now shorten the cord so that both ends meet without overlapping. The fabric border of the severed end is then placed over the other end, the edge of the diagonal strip being folded inwards. Now stitch the piping in place and you're done.
