Why was the EU founded?
You live in Germany and therefore also in the EU. But actually you don't really know why the EU was founded and what it is for?
What the EU is
- EU is short for "European Union" - it was founded by members of European states. The EU is an association made up of 27 European countries. The laws of the EU were resp. are determined by two existing contracts: a contract regarding the functioning of the EU (AEU Treaty) and another treaty on the EU itself (EU Treaty).

The respective governments of the various nations are represented in the European Council and the Council of the European Union. Why the EU was founded
In 1950 six states joined together to form the European Community (EC). Why? The main reason for the merger was the aftermath of the Second World War. The EC states wanted to unite economically through their community in order to be able to avoid military conflicts in the future. In addition, the community was founded by the European states to stimulate economic growth.
- Over the decades, other European states joined the community, after which the European Union was founded by the EC states. In February 1992 the Maastricht Treaty, now also known as the Treaty of the European Union (VEU), was signed. It was signed by the European Council in Maastricht (Netherlands).
- In 2002 there was a big step forward since the EU was founded. January 2002 the euro was introduced as the single currency within the EU. The euro is the uniform means of payment within 17 EU countries.
There is no concrete definition for "community", as these are in many areas ...
