What the EU is

Why the EU was founded

The EC states wanted to unite economically through their community in order to be able to avoid military conflicts in the future. In addition, the community was founded by the European states to stimulate economic growth.

In February 1992 the Maastricht Treaty, now also known as the Treaty of the European Union (VEU), was signed. It was signed by the European Council in Maastricht (Netherlands).
