How to put together an American porch

Here is a guide on how to build an American style porch with large solid wood beams.

  1. If you look at an American-style porch, you will likely notice that the porch is built on wooden beams. So for your veranda you first have to cut the basic beams A 1 to A 6, which are placed vertically in the ground and on which your veranda is then built.
  2. Now use spray paint to trace the outline of your porch. Since your veranda will be rectangular, dig a 45 cm x 45 cm x 100 cm hole at each corner. Then dig another hole with the same dimensions halfway along the long sides.
  3. If you want to build your veranda, the base beams should have a solid, firm stand, so you now mix the precast concrete and set the six base beams. Stabilize the beams so that they are level. Then let the precast concrete dry for at least 24 hours. During this time you can already build the frame parts of your veranda.
  4. So now cut the two side members B1 and B2. Then it is the turn of the two cross members C 1 and C 2. At the ends of the beams B 1 and B 2 as well as C 1 and C 2 get a 40 cm long recess. This recess is 20 cm deep. In other words, you halve the bars at the ends over a length of 40 cm and drill a 20 mm hole in all end pieces exactly in the middle.
  5. Build a carport - that's how it works

  6. Then all the insides are milled out to a depth of 20 cm and a width of 20 cm. The terrace beams are then nailed into these joints. The terrace beams D 1 to D 10 are then cut.

How to assemble your outdoor space

  1. First of all, you should now drill holes with a diameter of 20 mm in the middle of your four concrete corner beams. The nuts of the veranda frame will then disappear into the wood. Make the holes 2 inches deep. Then screw your porch frame together. You should have at least two helpers to help you build your porch, as the beams are quite heavy.
  2. After you have finished assembling the veranda frame, place it on the six concrete base beams and distribute the frame evenly. When that is done, screw two large steel angles each to the base beam and to the veranda frame.
  3. When the veranda frame has been built securely onto the base beam, you can now insert the terrace beams D 1 to D 10 and hammer them in with very long carpenter nails. Then, after all the nails have been hammered into the wood, you are done building your American porch.

First insert all the decking beams and then nail them up. Do not obstruct one beam after another.
