The Russian alphabet differs from the German in that it is written in the Cyrillic script and has more letters. You have to learn 33 letters, the most difficult are the so-called sibilants, which are very difficult to tell apart for a German native speaker.

Russian alphabet and the differences to German

  • Each of the Russian letters denotes a sound, just like in the Latin alphabet. In this respect, the alphabet is similar to the German and other European languages ​​such as English and French.   • A Russian alphabet has only the first two letters in common with German. It starts with "A" and "B", followed by the "W". It also has many more letters, namely 33. Some of them are sibilants, which are quite difficult for us Germans to pronounce and distinguish.
  • There are German letter combinations for the sibilants that make learning easier for you. These are, for example, "tsch", "Sche", "sch" or "z". Furthermore, Russian has a soft sign. This stands at the end of a word and dictates a soft pronunciation, but it is not spoken. The sounds of the other letters correspond to the Latin alphabet.

  • For a correct command of the Russian language, it is not only important that you can not only read the alphabet, but also write it. As in German, Russian cursive script differs from printed script. Practice writing from the beginning, because only then will it become your flesh and blood and you will be able to master the language properly.
