If you want to temporarily shut down a vehicle, the so-called decommissioning takes effect. However, this does not automatically affect your insurance contract. To interrupt the insurance cover, you must de-register your car with your insurance company using the de-registration certificate.

Temporarily de-register the car

If you want to temporarily shut down your vehicle, you will need to take it out of service. The deadline for this is seven years. If you do not register the vehicle again after this period has expired, the vehicle registration document loses its validity.

  • If you have had your vehicle temporarily shut down, you can deregister the car with your insurance company in order to interrupt the insurance cover. To do this, however, you need the registration authority's de-registration certificate.
  • You can then easily register your vehicle again within the next seven years, provided it was already registered in Germany and has a valid one TÜV disposes.
  • Note that if you leave your car temporarily out of service, you will not automatically keep your license plate. You should therefore reserve it if you want to use it again for re-registration.

If you want to temporarily shut down your vehicle, you will need certain documents. This includes the vehicle registration document or the registration certificate part II, the vehicle registration document or the registration certificate part I, the Mark as well as proof of whereabouts. In order to be able to de-register your vehicle with the insurance company, present the de-registration certificate there.
