Delete and do not archive messages on Facebook

Reading the messages you have received on Facebook is nice and entertaining, but deleting them again and again is a bit more time-consuming. Unfortunately, messages from Facebook are only archived, never completely deleted. If you want to delete instead of archive, there are ways to do this too.

The archiving of messages sent to you as well as chat conversations is carried out automatically by Facebook. This will quickly make your news overview long and confusing. Archive important Facebook messages

  1. On your profile page, click the letter icon in the top left corner above your profile picture.
  2. Move your mouse over to -> show all messages on the lower edge of the news tab.
  3. You will get an overview of all messages and conversations saved in your FacebookAccount.
  4. There is a small cross symbol on the right edge of the message that you want to remove from your overview. Click on it to archive your message.

Delete, not just archive

If you want to remove messages or entire conversations completely, the path is a bit more clicky and time-consuming, but it is definitely possible:

  1. Carry out the first three points of the instructions above.
  2. Select the gray, narrower text under the sender's name to go to that person's message overview.
  3. Click -> Options in the top right corner of the Facebook website.
  4. Select -> Delete Messages.
  5. Small boxes appear in front of the individual messages from the relevant sender
  6. You can now only click on individual messages that you would like to have deleted (option delete selected becomes clickable only when you have ticked the box, before that the field remains grayed out and is not clickable).
  7. If you want to delete the entire conversation with this person, it is sufficient to click -> delete all above the message overview, and confirm again with -> delete conversation.

Remember, the selected messages are completely deleted according to the instructions described, and are not kept for archiving. Take your time to see which messages you would like to have permanently removed.
