  • Lastly, check that you don't have one Proxy for your Internet connection that blocks or cancels the connection to the Apple server. It is best to deactivate this for the update or restore process.

Fix DNS errors on iTunes

Sometimes the error 3014 can also be caused by the fact that your computer's hosts file is set incorrectly.

  • The file can be used to assign a fixed IP to certain host names. Put simply, a host name is the complete address of a website.
  • If the Apple server "gs.apple.com" has been assigned an IP and the server cannot be reached under this IP, you will not be able to connect to your computer build up.
  • To review the Hosts file, you must open the Hosts file with a text editor. In Windows You can find the file by opening the "system32", "drivers", "etc" folders and finally "hosts" in the Windows folder. If you are using a Mac, you can find the file under "etc" and "hosts" or partly also under "private", "etc" and "hosts".
  • Then search the file for entries in which you can find "gs.apple.com" or "apple.com".
  • If you find such an entry, delete the entire line and then save the file.
  • Sometimes it can be that the DNS settings, i.e. the resolution of a host name into the respective IP address, are temporarily stored in the cache of your computer. In order to update the DNS changes in your hosts file, you must therefore also empty the cache.
  • With Windows you have to run the command "ipconfig / flushdns" under "Run" (Windows key and "R"). On the Mac you have to run the command "lookupd-flushcache" in the Terminal on Mac OS X Tiger (10.4) and use "dscacheutil-flushcache" on Mac OS X Leopard (10.5 and above).
