Relevant regulations for window tinting films

Before you settle into the beautiful tinting film in black with silver or another great color and apply them to your car, you should know a lot about car windows and window tinting films.

  • In § 23 StVO it is clearly stated that the driver is responsible for ensuring that the view is not impaired by anything on the vehicle. This applies to the transport of objects and, of course, to a very special degree, the condition of the windows of a vehicle.
  • If you subsequently apply tinting foils to the windows of your vehicle, this affects § 40 StVZO and leads under Circumstances for the expiry of the operating license according to § 19 StVZO, unless the tint film has a type approval according to § 22a StVZO. In short, if you apply an unapproved tint film that is not officially approved for the relevant windows, you are no longer allowed to drive and endanger the car driver's license and insurance coverage!
  • You are allowed to stick on smaller stickers such as plaques, advertisements and the like if their area is less than 0.1 square meters. However, you may not put stickers on more than 1/4 of the car window. Important: The window frame must not be pasted and the field of vision, which is published in the Federal Traffic Gazette 1986, p. 557 must remain free under all circumstances. This field of view is an approx. 30 cm wide strip that runs vertically in front of the driver's eyes.
  • If you apply a tint film to car windows that requires a type approval according to § 22 a Para. 1 no. 3 StVZO, you must always have a copy of the type approval with you - unless the tint film can be used according to § 19 para. 4 StVZO must be entered in the vehicle documents. The tint films must have a test mark.
  • Attach the tint film to the rear window - this is how it works

A tint film on the rear window of the car not only looks good, it also offers ...

  • Please note these regulations even if you only apply one color wedge. It is often the case that almost the entire permitted area is covered by this color wedge. If you then stick a vignette or an environmental badge, you have stuck on more than 1/4 of the pane.

How to attach the film to the car

  • When you have found the right ABE-numbered film, the rest is easy. Each foil comes with detailed instructions and the required spatula for pressing on. Remember that only the rear windows may be covered and an outside mirror on the passenger side is mandatory.
  • It pays to buy tint films for cars that are tailored to fit. Preformed and cut foils are particularly useful for curved panes. If you buy by the meter, you will need to cut it with scissors as best you can. The foils are attached inside.
  • Strictly speaking, the film is an adhesive film; there is no bonding in the conventional sense. You must therefore keep the tint film moist with a mixture of water and washing-up liquid from a spray bottle.
  • Clean the window where you want to apply the tint film. Peel off approximately half of the protective film that is attached to the tint film and fold it backwards (do not cut off)
  • Moisten the window with water and a mixture of washing-up liquid and apply the film precisely from below. Only when everything is in place, peel off the rest of the protective film and press the film firmly on using a rubber squeegee and a spatula.
  • Rub the film thoroughly on the window with a dry, soft cloth. The adhesion is due to the fact that there is no air between the glass and the tint film.

It is important that the view is not obstructed, because whether one can sufficiently see the traffic, is not a question of design, but important for your own life and that of others Road users.
