Make your own paper lampshade
You can make beautiful and individual lampshades out of paper and straw silk. Depending on the shape you want, use raw materials like a white lamp ball or wood and glue. With decorative elements, the piece becomes an eye-catcher in your home.
Paper and pears for your lampshade
If you want to make a lampshade out of paper, you have different options if the lamp should be square or round:
- It is best to make a pure paper lamp out of straw silk. Straw silk is a translucent colored paper, some with grain. The lamps shine in the color of the straw silk, for example in orange, yellow or purple.
- Pay attention to the Handcraft Make sure there is enough space between the paper and the lightbulb. Sufficient means at least seven centimeters on all sides. The light bulb becomes hot and must not ignite the paper. Choose a 40 watt light bulb.
- To make a round lampshade, use a white frosted glass ball. With glue and napkins or thin paper for Napkin technique conjure up a solid or patterned solid lampshade. You can use 60 watt bulbs in this lampshade.

How to make a square lampshade
To make a square lampshade wood and straw silk, you need thin strips of wood and glue.
- First make the framework for the lampshade. You use thin, about five millimeters thick, angular wooden strips. Cut four strips to the desired length and eight strips to the desired width.
- Bevel the eight strips that define the screen at the top and bottom at a 45-degree angle. Glue them together so that there are four squares.
- Glue the four strips that define the length from the inside into the corners of the two squares. The result is a framework in the form of a cuboid.
- Cut four pieces of straw silk that are exactly the size of the frame of the lampshade sides. Glue the pieces of paper to the outside of the framework. The wooden framework is no longer visible.
This lampshade can be used as a table lamp by pulling it over the bulb. If you want to use it as a hanging lamp, glue two wires or two more thin strips of wood into the top square of the frame. You can hang the lampshade on this.
Decorate the lampshade

- You can glue dried leaves and flowers on the outside of straw silk lampshades.

- If you work with the napkin technique, you can glue figurative or ornamental elements of other napkins onto monochrome napkins. Ivy leaves on yellow or cherry blossoms on light blue, for example, are beautiful.
- An original idea is to stick paper muffin or cupcake molds onto a round paper lampshade. Glue the molds close together.
