Sew baby blankets for twins yourself

When a baby is born, the joy is great. In the case of twins, the mother has these in a double pack. Much is needed twice or simply bigger. You also have to choose a crawling blanket to give away as a corresponding larger size.

What you need:

  • Fabric for the top and bottom
  • Fleece as a soft cushion in between
  • thread
  • scissors
  • Pins
  • sewing machine

For a baby, a playmat should be soft and easy to care for, i.e. easy to wash. If you want to sew these yourself, you can adapt the design for twins. That sew itself is done the same as when sewing a blanket for a baby.

A blanket for twins

  • Sewing for twins is a challenge and a lot of fun. at clothing sew everything twice and you can also design a playmat in such a way that two crawling areas can be recognized.
  • For example, divide a square blanket into two triangles. If there are two boys, use two different shades of blue. Then you have a light blue and a dark blue area on the playmat. In the case of two girls or one girl and one boy, choose the colors or patterns to match the pair of twins.
  • If you don't shy away from the effort, you can also apply the names of the twins to the triangles with the color-contrasting fabric. Maybe pretty pictures like small animals, flowers or the like are enough.
  • If you want to clearly see that it is a play mat for twins, use everything that is possible in pairs when designing it. Elaborate patchwork blankets are very popular. Here, too, you design the pattern so that certain elements always appear twice.

Are you looking for a present for your own child or that of the best ...

  • It is much easier if you choose fabric for the top and bottom and sew a blanket from the whole pieces. Even then, you can bring in paired elements. Simply cut the pieces of fabric in half and sew them back together so that you have one piece for the top and one for the bottom on each side. Then both sides of the ceiling are identical. If you still surround the divided pieces of fabric with a single-colored strip of fabric and use the same strip to border the entire ceiling, it will look even nicer.

Sewing a playmat with a plain backside - instructions

  1. First of all, you need the dimensions of the future ceiling and the corresponding pieces of fabric. If your top is made up of different pieces of fabric, sew them together first. If applications for the twins are to be placed on the blanket, these are also applied before sewing them together. For patchwork work, you can also use an already sewn part in the dimensions of the future playmat as the top.
  2. Second, you need a piece of fleece that is sewn between the top and bottom. This makes the blanket nice and soft. But be sure to buy easy-care fleece that can be washed.
  3. For the underside, choose a matching single-colored fabric and cut it around six to twelve centimeters larger than the top on all sides. These extra centimeters will later be knocked over the top at the edges, creating the edge of your ceiling. So the more fabric you add, the wider it will be. Use the zigzag stitch of your sewing machine to trim the edges of the upper and lower parts.
  4. Cotton fabrics can shrink to different degrees. So it is better to wash the parts and iron them before sewing them up.
  5. Now lay the underside down, the non-woven fabric on top and the future top side up. The beautiful side of the fabric must be on the outside.
  6. Next, the protruding edge of the fabric lying underneath is folded up over the tile and the top. Fold this edge inwards again and then pin it in place with pins. The ceiling then looks like it is finished. So all that's missing is sewing. You can fold the corners as corners of letters. (see the following article, third section: Sew corners of letters).
  7. Finally, you can sew up all the sides with the sewing machine, or you can baste the parts together again beforehand with coarse stitches. That is up to you and also depends on how easily the fabric can slip.
  8. In the case of a large play mat for twins, it makes sense not to sew the pieces of fabric only on the outer edge. Also stitch the parts together in the middle. Look for lines where the quilting seam either does not interfere, or use them consciously as a design element. You can also fix these quilting lines beforehand with pins or baste them with large stitches. When all parts are sewn so that they do not slip, your play mat for twins is ready.
