North America and its climates

You can already see many different climatic zones in Europe. But compared to this small continent, North America is huge. The regions are correspondingly different.

The climatic zones from Canada to Mexico

  • Canada extends into the polar regions in the north. The tundra, i.e. the cold steppe, predominates on the northern islands, while the boreal coniferous forest can be found in central Canada.
  • Thanks to ocean movements in the Atlantic, especially the Labrador Current, the polar and sub-polar weather conditions in North America are extended to the south. In comparison, the Gulf Stream effects for Europe the exact opposite: the weather is much warmer than the geographic location suggests.
  • The temperate zones begin roughly in the north of the United States. As in Central Europe, warm to hot summers and cold winters can be found here. In the east, the weather most closely resembles that of Central European conditions. In the Midwest there is usually a very dry climate, which promotes deserts and steppe formation.
  • In the south of the USA the climate in the east changes to subtropical, humid and warm conditions, in the west there are deserts, steppes and prairies (the typical environment of the "Wild West").
  • West of the Rocky Mountains there is an oceanic climate with rainy winters and dry summers. Here too, of course, the weather changes from north to south.

Weather extremes in North America

  • North America is known for extreme weather conditions due to its geographic location and shape. The Rocky Mountains in the west and the Appalachians in the east form a kind of funnel-shaped boundary for all weather capers. In addition, there is the framing by the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans as well as the Caribbean Sea.
  • The capricious weather shape the different climatic zones depending on the seasons. The tornado season hits the Midwest in spring, followed by heat waves in summer, which, depending on the climatic zone, can also lead to humid conditions and high levels of humidity. Both heavy rain and drought can occur in the same climatic zones.
  • The hurricane season follows in autumn, when strong storms hit the land from the sea. The winters are often characterized by blizzards, i.e. strong snowstorms.
