The trout belongs to the salmon family and is one of the most popular food fish. Often they are bred in special farms. Their actual living space is actually a completely different one.

The salmon fish habitat

  • The fish belonging to the salmonids originally come from North America. Today it is almost there worldwide. The animals prefer oxygen-rich and flowing water as a habitat.
  • The brown trout lives mainly in steep and very cold mountain streams. You can find them mainly in Scandinavia and Canada, partly also in the Alpine region.
  • The rainbow trout mainly ekes out its existence in fishing ponds, where it is released. Their real home is flowing waters in North America. Occasionally they are also available in Europewhere they were artificially settled.
  • Sea trout are the ancestral form that lives in Central Europe. They exist all over Germany - especially in the Baltic Sea towards Scandinavia and Russia as well as in the northern North Sea. However, they are particularly endangered in the interior of the country and are supported by resettlement measures.

The trout way of life

  • The freshwater form prefers the cold rivers, lakes and streams. There they mostly feed on aquatic insects. But you can also jump up and catch insects that are flying close to the surface of the water.
  • The migratory species, on the other hand, leaves their habitat after one to five years and moves into the sea. These animals prefer small fish and crabs for food. They hide under root and stones and then shoot out of their hiding place as soon as prey approaches.
  • The species living in the sea always stays close to the coast. After about five years, the animals move back into the river. In the period between July and November they migrate back to their native waters to lay eggs, mostly to the upper reaches of the streams.
  • There the females lay up to 10,000 eggs in the gravel of the cold and shallow water between October and March. From the eggs laid in the sand, the small larvae hatch after about three months, depending on the temperature.
