You have got yourself a sandpit for your child that needs to be filled with the right sand. But what is the right sand? What do you have to consider when buying, how is the density of play sand related to its quality and how do you find out the density in the first place?

To be considered when buying play sand

  • If you have sand for your Sandpit If you want to buy, you should of course make sure that it is also play sand. Above all, the grain size of the sand and the inorganic material from which it was crushed must be taken into account.
  • When playing sand, it should be fine sand. You should perhaps know that fine sand has a grain size of about one to a maximum of two millimeters. Regarding the material from which the sand was extracted, it should be said that it should not be simple stones such as granite. It is also important to ensure that the sand is obtained from a material such as sandstone, if possible, and that the surface of the individual grains is as round as possible.
  • If you want to buy high quality play sand, but you are not sure how good the quality of the sand actually is, you can take a sand sample and put it in water. When a broth is made, more or less clay is mixed in and the quality is not too high. An intense yellow color also indicates a high clay content.
  • The parameters described above now also affect the density of sand. Play sand should have a density of around 1.5 g / cm2 exhibit. The relationship between grain size and density is that coarse grain size leads to lower density. Too low a density indicates that the sand is too coarse. However, the density should not be too high, because that in turn indicates that particles various materials were mixed in, such as the aforementioned clay, which pollutes the sand leaves.

How to calculate the density of sand

  1. If you want to find out the density of play sand because it is not specified on the packaging, you need to know its weight and volume.
  2. Calculate the density of sand - this is how to proceed

The density of sand depends on various factors. Depending on the density, it also has ...

  3. Both parameters are easy to find out. So you just have to pick up a bucket whose volume you know. You now have to weigh that bucket and write down the empty weight.
  4. If you now put your play sand in the bucket, then its volume is logically that of the bucket. You can find out the weight of the sand by weighing the bucket again and subtracting the empty weight of the bucket that was previously written down from the corresponding value.
  5. To calculate the density you don't need much more than the formula p = m / V, where p stands for the density, m for the mass and V for the volume of your play sand.
  6. Using the calculated density, you can now find out whether you are actually using sand because, as described above, conclusions can be drawn about the grain size and the original material permit.

You learned something for life in physics, because here your physical knowledge ensures that your child can play with the best quality sand.
