Care for teak or let it gray?
If you don't care for teak consistently, patio furniture will turn gray over time. Some people see it as natural beauty, but for others it is a problem. The decision on how to deal with new teak furniture, however, must be made relatively quickly.
You are sure to be proud of your new garden furniture. But what should the teak look like in two or three years?
Caring for teak properly - you have to pay attention to this
- In order to properly care for the garden furniture, the trade offers a wide range of suitable oils. The prerequisite for maintaining the wood's color after the treatment is that you apply the oil properly and at regular intervals.
- It is certainly not too difficult to oil a table top. But what about the table legs? You then have to take care of them. Then there are the many hard-to-reach places on the chairs and the wooden deck chairs. Proper and complete use of teak oil costs time and nerves, and at least once a year.
- Please do not get the idea to protect the furniture with clear varnish for the sake of convenience. You will certainly not be satisfied with the result in the long term, because the lacquer will develop hairline cracks and the teak will turn gray under the lacquer layer. In addition, the paint can peel off over the years, so you will be forced to sand it off completely.
If you have decided against oiling
- New teak furniture is usually pre-treated so that you have a few months of rest for now. Then you should decide whether you want to consistently protect the wood against graying or not.
- If you do not maintain your furniture regularly, a silvery-gray hue develops over time, which becomes darker with every downpour. If you like this it is usually not a problem for the wood structure.
- However, the discoloration cannot be reversed. Once teak has turned gray, oiling alone will never give it that warm brown tone. The only way to make the brown wood tone visible again is to sand the wood. Depending on how deep the discoloration has penetrated the wood, it can be a laborious or almost impossible undertaking.
