Reasons why hydrangeas won't bloom

If your hydrangeas aren't blooming, there could be several reasons:

  • Once you have planted the bushes, the flowers can still be a bit puny or even completely in the first year. Then you shouldn't throw the gun in the grain and definitely give the plant a little more time. Usually they thrive much better in the second year after a full winter.

  • Hydrangeas sprout at the end of March or In early April. The plants can hibernate well in the garden. But once they have started sprouting and late frost occurs, the fresh shoots and the flower buds can freeze to death.

This is what you can do for good bloom

  • If your hydrangeas don't bloom, all that summer is to do is wait and see. The most common reason for the lack of flowers is frost.
  • Protect your hydrangeas from the cold in the coming winter. You can do this e.g. B. do with a frost protection fleece. This protects the sensitive inflorescences. Of course, you can also pile leaves around the plant.
  • Make sure you have the right cut. Do not cut hydrangeas until the spring before they sprout. Only remove old flower umbels. Pay attention to existing, new buds.
  • If you want a little more (approx. If you remove 25%) of the old inflorescences, the plant will not bloom as profusely, but it can gather strength and bloom all the more in the coming year.
  • You can fertilize hydrangeas with commercially available hydrangea or rhododendron fertilizer to provide enough nutrients for growth and flowering. This should be a nitrogen-rich complete fertilizer with little phosphorus.
