What are gummy bears?

  • Gummy bears come in many different colors, shapes and sizes. You know bears, mice or snakes.
  • Every child knows and likes gummy bears. Haribo has shaped this delicacy very much.
  • Gummy bears mainly consist of sugar, gelatin and flavorings. Gelatine makes the gummy bears so soft.
  • Each gummy bear has a different flavor, for example strawberry, apple or lemon.
  • Gummy bears: experiment with cola - an experiment guide

The gummy bear experiment with cola is often part of a chemistry class or at ...

  • But you can not only eat gummy bears, you can also put them in water. You can find out what happens then here.

Gummy bears in the water

  • You can easily recreate the experiment yourself.
  • Take a glass and fill it with water. Then put the gummy bear in the water glass and wait a few days.
  • The result: the gummy bear swells up and loses its color.
  • But why do the gummy bears swell up so much in the water?
  • As mentioned above, gummy bears mainly consist of sugar and gelatin.
  • The effect of the experiment is called diffusion. This means that the sugar contained in the gummy bears wants to get out in the water, but cannot because the gelatine is on the outside. This means that the sugar can only escape slowly. The water from the outside quickly gets into the gummy bear.
  • Thus, the sugar and the color gradually escape from the gummy bears and the gelatine soaks up with water. So the gummy bear loses its color and gets bigger.

This experiment is certainly very exciting for children, but they would certainly prefer to eat the gummy bears.
