The wisteria is a perennial robust and strongly growing creeper and climber that you can propagate in two ways.

What is striking about the wisteria is its huge, beautiful blue, white or pink flower clusters. With the Latin name Wisteria sinensis or floribunda the Chinese or Japanese type called. The plant is also called wisteria or wisteria and can reach a height of 30 meters. With proper care, they even bloom twice a year.

In order to grow wisteria yourself, there are a few things to consider when propagating, depending on which type of propagation you prefer. The wisteria is planted in spring. The best location in the garden is a warm, sunny south wall. A bit more shady is also not a problem, but then the flowers are not as lush.

Use wisteria seeds

  1. Harvest the seeds. You can pick these from existing plants shortly before the 10 cm long seed heads burst or buy them in a specialist shop.

  2. Prepare the seeds. Lightly file the seeds and then soak them for 24 hours.

  3. The pre-breeding. Now place them in a sandy, humus-rich substrate. At temperatures of 15 to 18 degrees they germinate after one to two months.

  5. Planting. Plant the seedling in sandy, humus rich, sufficiently moist soil. After planting, you should pile up the seedling with humus-rich, moist soil.

Propagate the plant by lowering it

  1. The right time. You should propagate by subsidence in the spring.
  2. Fix the shoot on the ground. Put a shoot on the ground. This must remain connected to the mother plant. Now it is fixed in a few places at a distance of about 25 cm, for example with pegs, so that it touches the ground.
  3. Waiting for roots to form. After a while, roots form on the fixed points by themselves in order to penetrate the soil.
  4. Separating the lowerers. The sinker is cut off from the mother plant and the rooted offshoots are planted separately. You can gain several offshoots from one sinker. Plant this as described above.

  1. It's a good time. Cut the cuttings from late spring to midsummer. To do this, take the new shoots of the wisteria.
  2. The right piece of the branch. Use a six to eight centimeter long piece of fresh softwood and put this in a pot with a moist substrate.
  3. Transplanting the shoot. When the first roots look out of the pot and the shoot is well rooted, you can transplant the young plant into the garden.

It is easiest to multiply by subscribers. However, you can only do this propagation in spring. Growing from seeds is also not very difficult, but requires a little more effort. If you want to try it with cuttings, you have to be prepared for the fact that this does not always work. Therefore, you should always start with several seedlings.
