  6. Bend nails. Do not drive the nails all the way into the side walls, but turn the ends so that the front no longer pops open by itself. Thanks to this attachment, you can open and clean the starling box by turning the bent nails.
  7. Attach roof correctly. Make sure that the roof does not protrude at the rear and that the narrower boards are also on the side walls.

  8. Note the gradient. The roof of the bird feeder should be sloping so that the rain can drain away. To do this, saw the side parts at an angle so that the boards are 27 cm long on one edge and 30 cm long on the other.

  9. Attach the staple. Attach a staple to the rear wall below the roof. However, do not knock this completely in so that a wire hanger can still fit through.

How to attach a perch in the nesting box

If you would like to attach a rod to the nest box, saw it to size with the dimensions 10 cm (length) and 8 mm (diameter). Then drill a hole with a diameter of 8 mm about 3 cm below the entrance hole. Then insert the rod into the pre-drilled hole.

To protect the starlings, do not use a wood preservative to let the wood in, but rub the boards with linseed oil. The corrugated cardboard usually attached to starling boxes is also somewhat controversial, as the box still gets wet, but the cardboard prevents it from drying out later. You should also clean the starling box once a year. It is best to do this in September or October.

How to attach the starling box to the tree

Now attach the starling box to a tree at a height of about 3 m using a fixed wire bracket, so that none Cats or other animals can get into the nest box. Simply hang the wire hanger over the branch you want. You hang the nest box on this with the staple.

If possible, attach the starling box as early as autumn. This should be done by March at the latest. The appropriate direction is east or southeast. The front of the box with the entrance hole should hang towards the front so that rain does not penetrate into the interior of the bird feeder. Accordingly, the back of the box is on the trunk or branch of the tree.

You can easily build a starling box yourself. Building a nesting box is a lot of fun, especially for children. With this nesting box you also give birds a protected breeding ground.
