Fundamental importance of periphery
- The term periphery comes from ancient Greek and actually means something like surroundings and is used in relation to a region or city to describe the peripheral areas.
- Also in common parlance, peripheral or periphery expresses that something is only meant in a marginal way.
- It can also be used to describe the opposite of a center, i.e. far away and not in the center.
- This term can also be found in everyday language use, when it is said that something "only affects peripherally" is expressed by the fact that this occurrence does not directly affect the person.
Examples from medicine
- In medicine, too, the term periphery is used to express and clarify a distance to the center. In the anatomy peripherally expresses the position of the described organ or, for example, the limbs. Everything that leads away from the trunk is thus described as peripheral.
- The term periphery is also used in medicine for blood vessels if, for example, these are the limbs that are further away, such as Feet or Toes supply. Blood vessels directly on the heart are called central. This term is also used for lymphatics.
- With regard to the nervous system, a distinction is made between a central and a peripheral nervous system. The brain and the spinal cord are counted as the central nervous system. The peripheral nervous system, on the other hand, includes all other parts of the nervous system, i.e. the nerves that supply the organs and muscles and spread to the ends of the body.
