A square has many facets. Make a note of the details and, if necessary, you can understand the correct formula and distinguish it from other geometric shapes. To better remember the formula for the diameter, first visualize the characteristics of a square.

A square has four sides of equal length

  • A square is a rectangle. It always has four sides of equal length.
  • So you can see the difference to the rectangle, which each has 2 sides of the same length.
  • The sides are all on the right angle to each other.
  • We denote a side length with the letter a.
  • Calculate the diagonal of the surface for the cube

The game cube is the simplest geometric body. Surface diagonal, ...

Calculate the scope

  • The scope is calculated from 4 x a. The number 4 results from the fact that the square has 4 sides. And a is again the length of one side.
  • Example: side length 5 cm, we calculate: 4 x 5 = 20, so the circumference = 20 cm.
  • Conversely, if you know the circumference of the square, calculate the side length from: circumference: 4.
  • Example: circumference = 40 cm, you calculate 40: 4 = 10 cm side length.

Calculate the area

  • The area is calculated as a².
  • Example: Side length a = 5 cm, we calculate: 5 to the square = 25 cm², so the area = 25 cm².

Calculate the diameter

  • The diameter is also called the diagonal. The diagonal is the connection of one corner with the opposite corner. The diagonal divides the square into two equal halves.
  • So you can draw two diagonals in the square. They are both always the same length. You can do the 1. Drag the diagonal from corner 1 to corner 3, the 2. Diagonal from corner 2 to corner 4. Both diagonals cross in the middle.
  • The formula for the diagonal is: side length a x the root of 2.
  • The square root of 2 is always 1.4142135.
  • Example: side length a = 5 cm. 5 times the root of 2, i.e. 5 times 1.4142135 results in: 7.0710675 cm.
  • The diameter or the diagonal of a square with a side length of 5 cm is 7.0710675 cm.
  • Another example: side length 2 m. The formula is: side length 2 m x the root of 2 = 2 x 1.4142125 = 2.828427 m.
