The importance of the degree of disability of 50

The term "degree of disability of, for example, 50" (GdB) comes from the law for severely disabled persons. The degree of disability is not measured as a percentage. It is a unit of measurement according to the social security code.

  • The GdB determines how and in what form they are impaired. At least a GdB of 20 must be present. The severely handicapped ID card is available with a GdB of 50.
  • The advantage of this disability, if there is any advantage at all, is that you can retire a little earlier. Certain requirements apply for this, including the year of birth. Talk to the pension insurance company about when you can retire.
  • If you go to work, you are entitled to five days' additional leave.
  • You can claim a tax exemption from the tax office. With a degree of disability of 50, the amount is currently 570 euros per year.

  • Depending on which impairment was found in you, you can also request domestic help. Currently up to 924 euros a year.
  • If you have the "G" or "aG" mark in your ID, this means that you are disabled. You can either obtain a tax reduction (half) for your car from the pension office or a supplement for public transport. In this case you pay 60 euros per year to the responsible office.

Sometimes there are also discounts for the cinema or the theater. As a rule, however, you need a degree of disability of at least 70.

How to apply for a severely handicapped ID card

It is usually the pension office that determines the degree of disability, for example 50. In any case, it is the competent authority. Ask your nearest city administration.

  • If you do not want to or cannot submit the application on your own, there is, for example, the Sozialverband Deutschland, which will help you with the application for a small annual fee. Any objection will also be processed from there.
  • Otherwise you can download the form from the Internet. Fill it in as best you can and include all of your doctors. It is best to enclose a passport photo with the application. If you have a degree of disability of at least 50, you will receive a severely handicapped ID card with a photo.
  • The responsible office will, among other things, request the doctor's reports and the office's assessor will determine the degree.
  • If you first receive a rejection, you should definitely file an objection.
  • According to this law, everyone is severely disabled who has at least a degree of disability of 50.
  • If someone has a GdB of 30, you can submit a so-called equality application - either to your employer or to the employment agency.

Be patient. The offices have a lot to do, and it can take four to six months to make a decision before all the medical reports are in.
