Shoelaces always open

Some types of shoes are worn with open laces. But with many shoes it is precisely these that give the wearer support while walking. It is annoying then how they keep opening up.

Shoelaces open - tips

Many people know the problem: The shoes are bought new, but you get annoyed about the supplied laces, which always come open, no matter how tight you tighten them. Perhaps these tips will help you further:

  • In fact, it could be because of the (new) laces. Many fashionable shoes have narrow, round laces that do not provide a good grip when lacing. If possible, just swap them out for wider ones. Narrow shoelaces also slip around in the shoe holes and therefore offer a good basis for even tight loops to open again. By the way, you will not only find a selection in shoe stores, but also with every shoemaker.
  • Often, new shoelaces are also unusually smooth, sometimes waxed or coated with a kind of shiny varnish. Looks good, but slips. Here it can help to use fine sandpaper to increase the surface roughness - and the loop will hold.
  • It has also proven useful to do a double loop. To do this, simply take out of the two loops and knot them. This way you also avoid too large loops or too long shoelaces dragging (and getting wet and dirty) on the street. One disadvantage, however, should not be hidden: Sometimes such a double knot does not open well; this is particularly difficult for children.
  • Do the laces always open because the friction is simply too low? Then you can also try a double wrap, which increases the friction between the cords. When tying a bow, you simply put the shoe cord around the starting loop twice instead of once. It's not that easy - you have to practice.

Only one side always opens

  • There is also that. No matter how tight you tie a shoe, it will always come open while the other side doesn't cause any problems. In this case, it could be the shoelace (again, not both are always the same) or you.
  • Just swap the laces between the two shoes and see what happens. If the other shoe is constantly opening, there is actually something wrong with the shoe string.
  • However, if the same shoe comes on again and again, then it is up to your loop technique. Chances are you'll make the loop a little different on both sides - it's not that uncommon. Maybe just try the following trick: Cross your legs and tie your shoes.
