Correctly set the return valve on your heating system
Your heating system should work perfectly in the cold winter months. Often, however, the return valve gets stuck. With a little manual skill you can adjust this yourself.
What you need:
- Ring spanner
- Pipe wrench
- Slotted screwdriver
This is how your heating works
- The water heated in the boiler of your heating system is pumped into your radiator by the circulation pump.
- The hot water is given off as heat in your home and, when cooled, flows back into the boiler to be heated again.
- The path of the hot water from the boiler into your radiator is called "flow" and the path of the cooled water back into the boiler is called "return".
- The return pipe is on the underside of your heater.
- If your heating system does not warm up evenly, you should check or replace the return valve. readjust.

Correctly set the return valve on your heating system
- Set the thermostat control of your heating system to "0".
- The return pipe is located at the bottom of the heater. Here you loosen the small lid on the return valve. This is mostly done by hand. Otherwise you will need a ring spanner or pipe wrench.
- You can now adjust the return valve with a slotted wrench. If you turn the valve to the right, the flow of heating water is reduced. Turning it to the left means that more water flows through the radiator.
- Should you need to remove the radiator for painting, etc. must be removed from the wall, turn the non-return valve completely closed. You do not have to remove the water from the radiator for this.
- If the adjustment of the return valve still prevents your radiator from working properly, you should consider hydronic balancing. This compensation is determined using heating curves. For this you should seek help from a professional.
