How to weave your wicker basket

Before you start, you should know a few basic rules for weaving wicker baskets. On the one hand, it is important to keep the wicker always moist. To do this, soak them in water before braiding and hold them briefly in the water or moisten them with a wet sponge.

  1. Now eight strands of willow are cut off, which should be the same length. You can decide for yourself how long the strands should be. It depends on how big you want your cup to be. Always calculate six to seven centimeters longer than the desired diameter of the floor plus the height of the wicker basket to be achieved.
  2. Now divide the eight strands into two groups of four strands and place them cross-shaped on top of each other. The strands should be as straight as possible and at a 90 degree angle to each other. They have to cross in the middle.
  3. Now stick a long strand of willow in the center of the cross and braid it around the strands. To do this, place it once over and once under the other other strands.
  4. Now the four strands are divided into eight by again leading the long willow strand alternately over and under the strands. Note, however, that this time only two strands are wrapped around.
  5. Basket weaving: weaving your own baskets - instructions

Weaving your own baskets takes a little practice. Once you have it, you can ...

  6. After three rounds, work two more strands into the braid. These are stuck where the long willow strand is straight. You should now have nine double strands in front of you.
  7. Now wrap the two new strands first, while the long willow strand is braided in rounds until the desired bottom diameter is reached.
  8. Now, after finishing the bottom, bend the strands at the top. You can tie them together with a bit of string at the top end of the strands to make braiding easier.
  9. Now weave the side walls of the wicker basket as well as the floor. So first put the long willow strand over, then under the next strand.
  10. Has your willow basket reached the desired height? Great, you are almost there. Now shorten the protruding strands to six to seven centimeters. For a nice finish and to avoid opening the basket, bend the ends of the protruding stakes over and tuck them into the braid next to the next stake.
  11. The edge becomes flatter the deeper you push the end into the braid. To get round arches, just slide the end in briefly.

Your wicker basket is ready! Please consider: Practice makes perfect. It will certainly take a while to get the hang of it. But no master has fallen from the sky yet. Good succeed!
