The Verdon Gorge lies between the towns of Castellane and Moustiers-Sainte-Marie, where the river of the same name, which also flows through the gorge, flows into the Lac de Sainte-Croix reservoir. In total, it is about 21 kilometers long. The deepest point is between Point Sublime and the reservoir.

Climb down into the Verdon Gorge

  • In the Verdon Gorge there are easy and very well secured routes in the climbing garden, but also difficult routes for professionals. There are some sport climbing routes of various degrees of difficulty, especially near the village of Aiguines.
  • For the descent down into the gorge you need good shoes, enough water and, above all, a very good physical condition. You should also absolutely have a head for heights. You should also think of sun protection, as shade is rare in many parts of the gorge. The best time for climbing is in spring and autumn, as it often gets unbearably hot at the bottom of the gorge in midsummer.
  • A nice route is the "Weg des Imbut", for which you should plan about five hours. It begins at the Les Cavaliers restaurant, where you climb down about 400 meters into the Verdon Gorge. From there the path leads along the Verdon River to Imbut. When you get there, you can either go back the same way or you use the Vidal exit and from there take the Vidal path back to the restaurant.
  • The Martel path is about 14 kilometers long and starts at the La Maline hut. You should plan about six or seven hours for the route, but there are a few things to see along the way, which costs additional time. There are two tunnels to cross on this route, so bring a flashlight with you. From the Baou tunnel you can descend a staircase to the pigeon cave, which is 30 meters high inside. If you want, you can also climb up to Mescla on this route. From the rock terraces at a height of 250 meters you have an impressive panorama of the two rivers Verdon and Artuby, which flow together there.

  • The angler path is a slightly shorter route. It begins at the Olivier Pass, where you first descend into the gorge and then hike along the river. At the point where the path rises again, you can visit the Saint Maurin waterfalls.
