Which longboard to use for cruising

A longboard is a special skateboard with a larger wheelbase. But there are also subtle differences among longboards. Here you will find a few tips and decision-making aids for the question of which longboard is suitable for cruising.

Typical properties of a longboard

A longboard is a specialty skateboard, actually the model that Hawaiians started out with. Its characteristics are as follows:

  • To this day, the longboard has, among other things, the shape of a surfboard.
  • Due to the length of the board, the center distance is larger than with the shorter skateboard.
  • The axles themselves are wider so that the wheels protrude from the sides.
  • Why a longboard is suitable for cruising can also be seen on the wheels. These are larger than on skateboards and much softer. The soft material evens out unevenness in the ground and makes riding a longboard extremely comfortable.
  • Which longboard is right for me?

If you want to buy a longboard, you should have some knowledge of skateboarding beforehand ...

  • Due to the wheels and the extended axles as well as the larger center distance, a longboard offers significantly higher driving stability than a conventional skatboard.

Which longboard you should choose depends on your own needs. For this, your height and weight as well as your driving behavior and of course the question of whether you want "downhill skating", "freelance / freestyle skating" or "slalom skating" are decisive.

If you want to cruise

In theory, every longboard is also suitable for cruising.

  • The simple cruising describes a leisurely drive through the area without special tricks or obstacles. In general, no special fine adjustments are necessary for this.
  • You should therefore pay particular attention to the length of the longboard, the material and good castors.
  • Remember that at some point you will probably also want to learn "carving" and "dancing" or one of the other driving techniques. It is better to buy a longboard that is also suitable for other riding techniques.
  • However, there are also very special longboards for people who just want to cruise - and want to perfect that.
  • Typical cruiser boards are also longboards, which have slightly different driving characteristics that are similar to the skateboard. A typical cruiser board allows higher speeds.
  • You should not choose any longboard for cruising that specializes in a different driving technique than cruising. Slalomboard, shlongboard or mini-longboard are therefore not recommended if you like to cruise a lot or mainly.
