What you need:

  • boards
  • Hand drill
  • Wooden dowels
  • Wood glue
  • hammer
  • Fasteners

Design your bookshelves individually

  • Before you procure the materials for the bookshelves, you should be clear about the size of the bookshelves, which includes both height and width.
  • Books are heavy, so bookshelves have to withstand a large load. You should take this into account when choosing the material.
  • The boards for the bookshelves should be accordingly strong and stable.
  • When a bookcase is on the floor, it is more stable than when you hang it on the wall.

Assemble the shelf stably

  1. In the hardware store you can have the boards cut to the desired size. The natural-colored wood of pine and spruce is best suited for this. If you would like to have more creative freedom in the manufacture of the bookshelves, then you should choose strong boards made of medium-density fibreboard. These can be painted as desired after a primer so that they fit well into the room.
  2. Build your own wardrobe - that's how it works

If pieces of furniture should fit the floor plan of the apartment or house exactly, then ...

  3. You will need two large, all-wood side boards that hold the bookcases together vertically.
  4. Three to four boards are required for the horizontal, which are firmly anchored on the shelf. Two of them limit the bookshelf at the top and at the bottom.
  5. A board should also be permanently attached in the first and last third of the bookshelves so that the shelf becomes stable.
  6. The remaining horizontal boards serve as removable shelves. Therefore, they should be one to two millimeters shorter than the other boards.
  7. Before you can connect all the boards of the bookshelves together, the necessary holes must be drilled. Therefore, you should be aware of the distances between the boards and the shelves.
  8. Now the first thing to do is to drill the holes for the boards to be firmly connected, which will give the bookshelves stability. Additional holes are required for the fastening elements of the shelves.
  9. The side panels, the horizontally delimiting boards and the middle boards are firmly glued using wooden dowels and wood glue.
  10. Since bookcases usually do not have a back wall, an additional board can give the shelf increased stability. You attach this board behind the firmly anchored middle boards so that it can act like a back wall.
