Avoid the Tauern tunnel when there is a traffic jam
Many holidaymakers heading towards Yugoslavia use the Tauern tunnel to get through the Alps. Especially at the beginning of holidays or on special weekends, traffic jams with longer waiting times can quickly arise.

Bypass the Tauern tunnel - this will avoid traffic jams
- Many holidaymakers who want to cross the Alps to the south are familiar with the problem: Long lines of cars form in front of the large Alpine tunnel, regardless of whether it is Gotthard, Bernadino or Tauern. You can expect hours of waiting. However, if you are not afraid to cross the Alps on (mostly well-developed) federal roads, you not only save tolls and time, but can often also enjoy a beautiful mountain stretch.
- The Tauern tunnel is part of the A10, which comes from Salzburg in the direction of Wörthersee, Klagenfurt or Slovenia runs. This is a stretch of traffic congested, especially during the holiday periods, where long waiting times have to be expected due to the block handling at the tunnel.
- It is possible to bypass the Tauern tunnel, which is also subject to a toll.
- However, you are on a federal highway. It therefore makes sense to carefully report the corresponding traffic jam reports from Austria on the day of travel track so that one traffic jam is not caused by an even bigger traffic jam on a federal highway replaced.
- Leave the A10 motorway at the Radstadt exit and use the B99 from there, which is roughly parallel to the A 10 motorway. Drive towards Obertauern.
- When you have reached St. Georgen, you can rejoin the A10 motorway.
- This bypass also saves you the Katschberg tunnel. However, it is a mountain route that caravans are not allowed to drive on.
