How much gasoline you can really transport

There are clear legal regulations on how much gasoline you put in Germany be allowed to transport in your vehicle.

The amount of gasoline that you can transport in your vehicle is not precisely specified. There is a different rule for this: a maximum of one reserve canister may be carried. Other filling containers are not permitted.

The date of manufacture is usually printed on the reserve canister. If this corresponds to the valid DIN standard, you will also find a corresponding printed or stamped note.
  • This requirement already limits the amount of gasoline significantly. There is, however, another requirement: You may only carry a quantity that is actually needed in an emergency. The amount is not quantified more precisely, but there are recommendations. These state that 20 liters are sufficient for a car and 60 liters for a truck.

What you should also consider when transporting gasoline

  • In addition to the reserve canister in accordance with the DIN standard, the correct securing of the canister must also be considered. Petrol is highly flammable and the spare canister is also an unsecured projectile in the event of an accident, which is life-threatening for all occupants of your car. According to German law, the canister may not be transported lying freely in the trunk.

  • Also the customs keeps an eye on imported fuels. More than 20 liters may not be imported duty unpaid from this side either. So even as a truck driver, it is not recommended to import the maximum 60 liters into Germany.
