VIDEO: How to calculate square meters

A square consists of four sides of equal length. In the geometry if each side has an assigned letter (a, b, c and d), you can determine which side has which length. A is the symbol for the area, a and b represent the Symbols for the sides. All square and rectangular areas can be calculated with this formula: The unit of measurement for the area is m².

How to calculate the areas

  • Since a square has four sides of equal length, a = b = c = d. Thus, one square meter is the area of a square that is one meter long and 1 meter wide.
  • The formula for calculating the square meter looks like this: A = a * b.
  • The same goes for the rectangle. This consists of two sides of different lengths. So a = c and b = d apply to the rectangle. If you now calculate according to the formula, this means nothing other than "length times width = square".

Calculate square meters for special shapes

  • Triangles consist of three sides (a, b and c). To calculate the square meters, take the base edge (b) and multiply it by the divided height (h). The formula looks like this: A = b * 1/2 h
  • Difference between area and perimeter - an explanation

You can easily determine the area and perimeter of geometric shapes ...

  • It gets more complicated when calculating the area of a trapezoid. To do this, the different opposite lengths of the edges must first be added. Then divide the result by 2 and then multiply by the height (h). A trapezoid is either isosceles (parallelogram), so both legs are of the same length, then the following applies: a = c, b, d or unequal, then a, b, c, d applies. The formula looks like this: A = ((a + c): 2) * h or you can calculate A = ((b + d): 2) * h
  • To calculate the square meters of a circular area, you need the number pi (3.141). You can do this calculation more precisely if you have a calculator to help. Since a circle consists of one side, you need the circle radius (r) for the calculation. This is multiplied by the square of pi. The formula looks like this: A = r² * Pi

With these four formulas you can calculate almost any area.
