You should align the correct position of the first stone with the help of the spirit level, then you can use it as a guide in the future. For each additional row, carefully stretch the guideline again.
5. Use a trowel to remove excess mortar from the gaps between the sides before placing and pressing down the next row of stones. You can then smooth out minor bumps in the joints with your thumb.
