Have you planned a trip to the Czech Republic or do you want to travel through the country? As in some other neighboring countries, motorways and certain expressways are subject to tolls in the Czech Republic. While large vehicles such as trucks and buses carry a toll box, you have to buy a motorway vignette for passenger cars and smaller vans.

Not all roads require a vignette.

When do you need a vignette in the Czech Republic

  • If you use a motorway or expressway in the Czech Republic, you are subject to a vignette under certain conditions. This applies to vehicles with at least four wheels and a total weight of up to 3.5 tons. For heavier vehicles, the toll, which in this case depends on the distance traveled and the type of vehicle, is settled electronically using a toll box. The weight stated in the vehicle registration document always applies, not including trailers. Motorcycles are exempt from the toll and vignette obligation.
  • Before starting your journey, find out whether you need to drive on roads or road sections that require a vignette. You can find this Overviews on the Internet. During the journey, you can see when the vignette requirement begins and ends by the corresponding signs. In any case, take them seriously, even if you only drive a short toll route, as fines of up to 5,000 CZK can be imposed for violations.
  • The vignette is mandatory from the border. This means that you must already have a valid vignette affixed if, for example, you are entering the Czech Republic via the motorway.

Which vignettes you can buy

  • There are annual, monthly and 10-day vignettes in the Czech Republic. You can get this at most petrol stations and exchange offices. The prices are always valid for one year. In Germany you can use the vignettes in ADAC online shop or buy it in the Saxon ADAC branches.
  • You will see the imprint "R" on the annual vignette for a calendar year. It is always valid from 1. December of the previous year to 31. January of the following year for 14 months.

  • The monthly vignette with the imprint "M" is valid until the same day of the following month.
  • You can recognize the 10-day vignette by the "D" imprint. It is valid from the marked date until the end of the 10th following calendar day. Even if you only need the vignette for one day, you have to buy the 10-day vignette.

How to affix the motorway vignette

  • The motorway vignette consists of two parts. Write your license plate number on both sections. In the case of a vehicle with a trailer, only enter the license plate number of the towing vehicle.
  • Detach the smaller coupon and keep it as a receipt. You must be able to show it in the event of an inspection. Affix the vignette to the inside of the windshield, at the bottom on the passenger side. Please note that an incorrectly affixed vignette can also result in a penalty.
  • A motorway vignette that is removed after it has been stuck on loses its validity. You must remove old, no longer valid vignettes.
  • You can exchange annual vignettes in certain cases. This is the case, for example, if the windscreen or the vignette has been destroyed or if the vehicle, the vignette or the coupon has been stolen from you. You can apply for an exchange or refund in the Czech Republic at an authorized post office. This must also contain a copy of the accident report or the report to the police.
