Voluntary social year in the hospital

This is how you do a voluntary social year

• You can do a voluntary social year if you have completed your compulsory schooling and are still under 27 years old. It is called a voluntary social year, but its duration can be between six and 18 months and in exceptional cases even two years.
• You can choose whether you spend this time in a social, cultural or sporting institution want to spend or whether you prefer in the political or ecological area or in the preservation of monuments are active.
• For the social sector z. B. a hospital, an old people's home, an outpatient social service and an ambulance service are in question. There you take on the simpler tasks to support and relieve the trained staff.
• As remuneration for your work, depending on the provider with which you are completing your voluntary social year, you will receive some money, in some cases also accommodation or food. You are insured for the duration of the voluntary social year through the provider of the facility and can continue to receive child benefit.

If you have already passed the age limit for a voluntary social year, you can register for the Federal Voluntary Service, for which no age limit applies.

Your duties in the hospital

A voluntary social year gives you a good insight into working in a hospital. This is especially helpful if you don't yet know whether medical training is right for you.

• During this time, you will be assigned tasks in the hospital that do not require medical training. These include, for example, simple nursing activities, making beds or helping the patient with eating or getting dressed.
• For this job, you should be sociable and be good with people. Since these are sick people, patience and empathy are also essential.
• Your colleagues in the hospital are available to answer any questions or problems you may have while completing your tasks. In addition, there is always support during the voluntary social year who conducts seminars with you, but is also available as a contact person. You can turn to this person with all questions and problems that have to do with the accomplishment of your tasks.
• Working in a hospital is not easy, especially at the beginning. So look for a balance in your free time - unless you already have a hobby - to switch off and collect new energy for the next day.
• Dealing with illness and death you will probably not learn until you are in the hospital, and it is not easy. Discuss work-related events that have weighed you down with friends or family. Even if they can't offer you a solution, it helps to have someone to talk to about it.
