Karawanken tunnel - requirement for use

The Karawanken tunnel has been the gateway to the Balkans and Austria since 1991, as it connects the Austrian A 11 and the Slovenian motorway network with one another. It runs between the places Rosenbach and Jesenice through the Karawanken.

  • If you want to drive through the tunnel, you have to pay a corresponding toll. Regardless of whether you have already paid a separate toll for the Austrian or Slovenian motorway. As of June 2013, the toll for the Karawanken tunnel is € 6.50 for a one-way trip. This price applies to cars with trailers and up to 3.5 tons as well as motorcycles.
  • Trucks and mobile homes also pay this price for a single passage, while individual graduated prices are charged for driving on adjacent motorways. These depend on the number of kilometers to be driven, the respective emission class and type of vehicle.

Pay tolls

  • Before using the Karawanken tunnel, please note that the toll fee for this is not included in the toll sticker price for the motorways. Driving through the tunnel must therefore always be paid for separately.
  • As a frequent user, you can also purchase a points card to save costs. The points card is valid for 18 months and has 800 points. 55 points are deducted from this for a one-way trip.

  • For example, a weekly vignette for Slovenian motorways costs 15 euros, a monthly vignette 30 euros.
