How to insert an expansion joint in the screed
- An expansion joint enables the new screed floor to expand as soon as it warms up. The masonry does not shift the floor when heated, but without an expansion joint the screed could arch upwards and expand in the middle of the area. A narrow strip is sufficient for this, but it must be a little higher than the planned screed. The strip consists of impact sound insulation and is about 4 - 5 cm thick.
- If you pour the screed now, it can no longer reach the wall, so to speak. This inevitably creates the expansion joint. Cut off the excess of the step insulation as soon as the screed has dried out and can be walked on.
- A professional company for screed production will also process fibers into the screed. These then also prevent the screed covering from cracking. The expansion joint absorbs the linear expansion of your screed and prevents the formation of cracks.
- Existing Doors and protrusions are to be handled with even greater care. Here you should ask a specialist or prepare the joint plan in accordance with DIN 18560.
