Build a shelter for firewood yourself

As most people probably know, burning wet wood creates a lot of smoke. It can even cause a fire in the fireplace at home. So you should let the wood dry first before you burn it. If you want to dry wood, the best way to do this is in your self-made shelter for firewood.

What you need:

  • wood
  • Precast concrete
  • Spirit level
  • Wood screws
  • drilling machine

Prepare the shelter

These instructions are intended for firewood that has been cut to one meter:

  1. Have four timber beams cut to a length of 300 cm in a joinery or carpentry shop. There should be 20 cm x 20 cm bars. It can also be thicker bars if nothing else is available. Then four more bars at 250 cm with the same lengths and widths as the first four.
  2. Next, saw four roof battens to a length of 100 cm. Then sixteen intermediate beams for your shelter for firewood are cut to a length of 100 cm. These bars serve as reinforcements and do not have to be that thick. Here 10 cm x 10 cm are sufficient.
  3. You have prepared the structure so far. So now you come to the roof for your shelter for firewood. Use normal one centimeter thick chipboard and cut the panels to 200 cm x 150 cm. You need two of the variety. Then cover the panels with roofing felt.
  4. Corrugated metal sheets are then later placed on the chipboard, which of course you have obtained beforehand from the hardware store, just like the precast concrete and the long wood screws. The material you are working with is not light - so it would be good to have someone with you when setting up your firewood shelter.
  5. Use weatherproof wooden panels to build a device shelter

Construction of the drying point for firewood

  1. When you've found the right place for your firewood shelter, dig a 50 cm deep hole and use the quick-drying concrete to put the first 300 cm beam in the ground.
  2. With the help of a spirit level and a tape measure, the second hole is dug exactly 100 cm behind the first beam. The first 250 cm beam is then placed in this 50 cm deep hole with the aid of the quick-drying precast concrete. Make sure that the dimensions are exactly right.
  3. The next two bars that you set for your shelter for firewood will be placed exactly 100 cm to the right of the first two bars. The 300 cm long one comes in front and the 250 cm long one in the back, both also come 50 cm into the ground again. Do the same with the rest of the beams. If you have done everything correctly, there are now eight bars in front of you - the long ones in front, the short ones in the back with a distance of 100 cm. If so, you can continue building your firewood shelter.
  4. Now the 100 cm long intermediate beams are drawn in. Between every two base bars, there are two intermediate bars all around, with the exception of the front, which remains open. The first should be installed at a height of 50 cm and the second at a height of 150 cm. The intermediate beams are screwed and then screw the 100 cm long roof battens, four in number. The roof battens are attached in such a way that each of a 300 cm base beam connects to a 250 cm base beam. Since you are sawing the top at a slight angle, this action won't be a problem.
  5. Finally, put the chipboard covered with roofing felt and distribute it evenly on your shelter for firewood. Then drill holes exactly in such a way that you drill a base beam through chipboard and roof battens. Then screw everything together and the roof is ready. However, in order to make your shelter for firewood really weatherproof, you should completely cover the roof with corrugated iron and screw it on.

The shelter for firewood, from this manual, can be expanded at any time.
