This is how the Champions League works

In the Champions League the best teams of the past championship year of the best European leagues meet. Each league has a certain number of qualifying places, depending on its position in the UEFA five-year ranking.

  • As you probably know, the top two teams in each group will advance to the knockout stages of the Champions League.
  • In the knockout phase, your two teams play against each other in two games, with each team having one home right.
  • You have to observe the away goal rule. Goals scored in foreign stadiums are worth more with the same goal difference. You can find out more about this in the next section.

The away goals rule - what is it?

  • The away goals rule always comes into play in the Champions League when your two teams have scored exactly the same number of goals in both games.
  • Away goals rule in the European Cup - this is how you apply it

In the Europa League and Champions League there is the so-called ...

  • Suppose team 1 wins their home game 2-0. In the away game, however, team 1 is defeated 3: 1. Team 1 and Team 2 have each scored 3 goals, the goal difference is 3: 3. Since team 1 scored an away goal at 3-1, team 1 moves on to the next round.
  • You can already see that it is very important to score at least one goal in the foreign stadium. For example, if you lose 2: 3 with your opponent, then a 0: 1 in your stadium is not enough for your opponent due to the away goals rule. Even a 1: 2 is not enough. He has to win with at least two goals difference or 3: 4, which is rather unlikely.
  • The away goals rule has often led to the tactics of individual teams. Every now and then this caught the eye, because a defensive bulwark can be overcome with a lucky long-range shot. Therefore, you should always play to win, even in the opposing stadium.
  • If no winner can be determined despite the away goals rule, the last match between the two teams goes into overtime. Both teams have two chances of scoring a goal each 15 minutes of play.
  • If, despite extra time, no winner has been determined, the winner of the game will be determined by means of a penalty shoot-out.

As you can see, the away goals rule is not that difficult to understand. In the next Champions League game, you can check whether you have understood the rules.
