Seal a pipe with suitable sealing material

Dripping pipes are an extremely uncomfortable thing. With the right sealing material, you can quickly remedy the situation and seal leaks.

There are pipes made of galvanized steel, copper and plastic. However, leaks can occur in all pipes. In order to be able to seal the leaks, you need a suitable sealing material.

How to seal a galvanized steel pipe

Galvanized steel pipes are connected using screw threads. In order to seal them, the threads must be provided with a sealing material.

  1. It is best to seal the threads by wrapping hemp around them. Hemp is wrapped directly into the pipe thread in thin strands. Then it is smeared with a liquid sealant.
  2. After the pipes have been screwed together, the sealant hardens. This means that the pipe is permanently tight.
  3. Another possibility is to wrap the thread with a Teflon tape. This process is much easier than sealing with hemp, but it doesn't last that long.
  4. Crack in the sewer pipe - you can do that

You can also seal a copper pipe

  1. You can only seal a copper pipe with a soldering iron and so-called hard solder. Hard solder is mostly offered in the form of brass wire.
  2. The connecting pieces must first be sanded down with emery cloth so that they are clean and free of grease.
  3. Then insert the pipes into each other or insert a pipe into an elbow or a tee and press firmly together.
  4. Then heat the pipe connection with a soldering iron and hold the hard solder on the edge so that it becomes liquid and flows into the space in between.
  5. After cooling, the pipe connection is durable and tight.

This is how you can seal plastic pipes

  1. You can seal plastic pipes with a rubber seal. As a rule, no tools are required for this.
  2. You place the seal in the groove provided and push the pipes together as far as possible. Pushing the pipes together is relatively easy.
  3. If it's not that easy, you can apply some flux to the inner tube. Special agents are offered for this purpose in specialist shops. These agents also contribute to the sealing.

If a pipe does not leak at a connection piece, but at another point, you can make a makeshift seal with insulating tape. You should only do this in exceptional situations. Under no circumstances is something like this a permanent solution.
