What DVB-S means

  • You should know that DVB is called digital video broadcasting. In a broad sense, this means the digitized transmission of television, as well as radio or teletext. Accordingly, DVB-S implies precisely that digital transmission via a direct radiating satellite. Most of the television broadcasters you know, such as ARD and ZDF, use this digital method primarily because of the high data transmission rate on which it is based.
  • Unlike DVB-C, which stands for cable television, DVB-S does not rely on additional networks to transmit the data, so the Receipt of the transmitted data is unconditional, no matter where, what has earned DVB-S technology the nickname "TV everywhere" Has.
  • You can imagine the DVB-S2 process as a further development of this technology. Above all, DVB-S2 offers an improvement in coding and modulation methods compared to its predecessor, so that an even higher data rate can be sent. If you want to switch from DVB-S to the 2 version, you can do this without any problems with the appropriate receivers or TV cards. Just ask in the electronics store.

What the DVB-S tuner is

  • You can think of any module for receiving television and radio signals as a tuner. You will probably assume that a tuner is simply a receiver, but it is not quite so. Only the combination of signal amplifier and signal receiver, i.e. tuner, is understood as a receiver.
  • A tuner filters out a desired signal from a certain amount of data. As you probably know, television and radio broadcast on different frequencies. So if you want to watch ARD, the tuner concentrates on the broadcast sequence of the same in order to filter out the desired broadcast signal from the total amount of data it receives.
