Identify intervals based on the semitone steps
Intervals can be recognized by the semitone steps. You just have to know what an interval is and how many semitones result in which interval.
In order to determine intervals using semitones, you need to know what an interval is and what intervals there are.
What are the intervals
An interval is the distance from one volume to another. Intervals can be superimposed e.g. B. are in chords, but also when two notes are next to each other, the distance between them is called the interval.
- The simple intervals are sorted according to the size of the distance from small to large: prime, second, third, fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh and octave. Prime refers to the interval between the same tone, e.g. B. from c to c. The second describes the interval from one tone to the next higher or lower. The third is then again a distance larger, etc.
- The octave denotes the same tone, only eight tones higher or lower, e.g. B. c and c '.
- Learn the intervals by heart in order to be able to work with them well. It's easier to remember when you know that the names are derived from Latin. Prime stands for one, second for two, third for three, etc.

Determine the pitch in semitone steps
- If you want to determine intervals, you should include the base and target tone. So you would e.g. B. Counting from c to e to three, so it would be a third.
- Since you also count to three from c to es, you can use the semitone steps to determine the intervals even more precisely.
- c-e would be B. a major third, but c-es a minor.
- In this way, you can also recognize all the pitch intervals based on the semitone steps.
- A prime is not a semitone step apart. A small second is a semitone apart, a large two, etc.
- Note that there is only a prime, a fourth, a fifth and an octave. The other intervals are large and small.
