The beginnings of child benefit go back further than some might think.
- As early as the 1930s, the state initially paid large families a one-off allowance, which was soon converted into a monthly benefit. This idea of family support found its way into the still young Federal Republic even after the war.
- However, child benefit as you know it today has only been in place since the mid-1970s. Only since then does the payment begin with the first child. Before that, it was customary for an entitlement to exist only with the second child. The further the timeline goes back, the more children it took to get any support at all. Initially, the entitlement only arose when the fifth child came into the family.
- The dependency on the child's income has not been in force since 2012. The state now also pays children in the education child benefit with their own income, making it easier for them to start their independence.
