How does a subwoofer work?

A woofer is called a subwoofer. Its frequency range is below that of a normal loudspeaker, so that subwoofers can be used as a supplement to a normal loudspeaker system.

A subwoofer is the bass addition to a loudspeaker system.

This is how a subwoofer works

  • The name "subwoofer" is made up of the terms "sub" for Latin (or English) "under" and "woofer", the low-frequency chassis of a loudspeaker.
  • Accordingly, the subwoofer is a low-frequency or special bass loudspeaker that has been specially optimized for a tone frequency range of 30 - about 150 Hz. A small "box" can therefore not function as a subwoofer, even if this is claimed from time to time in the shops (some dealers even claim that a system can do without it ...). Subwoofers are characterized by a certain size and are usually placed on the floor for home applications.
  • Depending on the setting of such a subwoofer, which complements a normal loudspeaker system, you can provide a special amplification of the bass range.
  • Accordingly, subwoofers are used in discos, but also in loudspeaker systems for the home that require an additional bass speaker, e.g. B. for surround sound or home theater systems. For example, Dolby Digital and DTS have their own audio tracks for the subwoofer.
  • However, optimal surround sound is only achieved if the subwoofer is calibrated to the room acoustics. In addition, it must be matched to the existing, normal loudspeaker system. Special calibration and sound CDs are available for this.

  • There are passive and active subwoofers. A passive subwoofer works practically like a normal passive loudspeaker, only in this case the frequencies above a fixed limit of around 150 - 200 Hz are cut off. In this case, you make the setting for the bass sound on the amplifier.
  • In the case of active subwoofers, the device itself has a built-in amplifier stage that amplifies the low-frequency pre-stage signals from the AV receiver or AV amplifier instead. The parameters for the bass amplification can be set on the subwoofer itself, but also on the receiver itself. Of course, this system offers more options.
