This is how it works with your own mailbox.

What you need:

  • 6 wooden panels
  • Screws
  • Cordless screwdriver
  • pencil
  • ruler
  • if necessary: impregnation paint / impregnation spray
  • Saw (if available: jigsaw)

Instructions for building your own mailbox

  1. First, you should consider what type of mail your mailbox should be suitable for. Depending on the size and weight of your delivered deliveries, select the appropriate size, width and height of the wooden panels or their thickness. The dimensions in the following article should refer to a letterbox that is large enough for newspapers, A4 envelopes, catalogs and of course letters and postcards. Once you are clear about the purpose of your self-built mailbox, you can start cutting your wood panels.
  2. For the front of your mailbox, use a pencil to sketch the dimensions you want on the first of your wooden panels. In the case under consideration, one calculates a length of 40 cm and a width of 20 cm (final height). After that, use your saw to cut along the pencil lines you made to finish the front.
  3. To make the back wall of the mailbox, process the second of your wooden panels in a similar way to the first. Again you sketch a length of 40 cm, but calculate the width approx. 3 cm (final height) in addition. Thus, the lid falls from the back to the front later, any rain can flow down and you Mailbox is thus protected from moisture penetrating and thus has a longer service life.
  4. The floor must now be cut to the same length as the front and rear wall (40 cm). You can choose the width (later depth of the mailbox) yourself as required (in this case 30 cm).
  5. Now only the two side parts and the lid have to be sawed out. For the length of the two side parts, calculate the width of the floor (30 cm), while the width of the front or the back wall needs to be adjusted. This means that you choose a width of 20 cm at the front and a width of 23 cm at the back so that the side parts are adapted to the inclined position of the lid.
  6. Build desk top yourself

  7. The last wooden board is now cut to size to make the lid of your mailbox. Since the mailbox should be opened properly later, the lid should protrude slightly both to the front and to the side. Therefore you now calculate about 2 cm more for the length than for the length of the side parts (in this case 32 cm). For the width you need about 2 cm more than for the length of the front or the back wall (here: 42 cm)
  8. Now that you have all of your pieces cut to size, screw the front, side, bottom and back panels together appropriately using the screws and the cordless screwdriver.
  9. Finally, attach two hinges, one on the right and one on the left, to your rear wall and connect them to your cut-to-size cover. Thus, the mailbox can be opened and closed without any problems and the corresponding deliveries can be delivered in it. If your mailbox is exposed to rain and moisture, it makes sense to use the spray the finished box with the impregnation spray to make it resistant to wind and weather do.
