1. Dig a trench that is approx. 50 cm wide and 80 cm deep. The surprising depth is due to the fact that water must be able to flow off unhindered, even in frosty conditions. As soon as the thaw sets in, the ice thaws from top to bottom and stands in the ditch around the house until the ground has also thawed. It's not good for the basement.
2. Place root fleece in the trench if you want to be sure that no plants can grow up from there. But that's not really necessary with the depth. If weeds should show up later, they are definitely rooted in the earth or rotted leaves that sit between the gravel.

3. Apply bubble wrap along the wall if it has a soft coating, such as tar. If the wall is covered with hard plaster, you do not need this film. Its only purpose is to protect the paint from the stones.
4. Solidify the soil and the walls of the ditch. Concrete curbs on the side facing away from the house to consolidate the edge of the trench. This protection is useful so that no soil can slide into the ditch of the splash guard. Even a small amount of soil can cause weeds to settle in the gravel bed.

5. Now pour very coarse gravel or stones into the trench. This splash guard for the house also acts as a drainage.

For every measure, consider what other effects it will have, thermal insulation can lead to mold growth and splash protection can damage the basement:

• Without a splash guard, dirt from the ground would contaminate the house wall. In addition, moss or graying can occur because the seeping water dampens the wall.
• A splash guard 10 to 15 cm deep would solve the problem, but means that due to the frost conditions in winter, water can accumulate there for a long time. The house would stand in the water, which could not happen without this splash guard. So you have to lay the splash guard so deep that it also acts as a drainage ditch. One thing leads to another.
• If you have small children in the house, the gravel bed is a welcome playground for them - no problem if they do not swallow or even inhale the small stones. You can help yourself here by using fist-sized stones.
