This is an excellent address for anyone who wants to read books in German online for free Project Gutenberg-DE. The site has been digitizing and publishing works since 1994, most of whose authors have died more than 70 years ago. The works are therefore free of copyright. Over 5500 novels, dramas, poems, short stories and non-fiction books by over 1100 authors are accessible on the site.

You can find an alphabet at the top of the home page. Click on the first letter of the last name of the author whose books you want to read, for example on "B" for Georg Büchner. A page appears with a picture of the author and biographical information as well as a list of his works. Books that you can read online are marked in blue. Click on the blue link (identical to the book title) and you will get to the text.
